I found this amazing visitors guide to Grand Rapids, MI at a yard sale today! Grand Rapids is a pretty big city a couple hours away from my little town of Owosso, and apparently in 1968, the night life was SWINGIN'! Seriously, what happened to the days of all-you-can-eat smorgasbords, cheesy lounge acts, cocktails, and go-go dancer waitresses? I really need to find a time machine so I can escape this modern day sports bar horror show!!!!

It's a darn shame you can't get cool gear like this anymore, at least not this cheap! I'll bet you anything that there is a warehouse full of this new/old stock somewhere just rotting away.

I a little puzzled by this seemingly unlicensed Zappa poster. What did he do that begs forgiveness? Maybe they didn't mean for it to be Zappa, like he's just a representation that ALL men need to be forgiven for the dumb crap they do? Hahahaa!

I'd love to have this mega sized op-art poster to gaze into. It would probably make me go blind...

You may have noticed (but probably not) the Phoney Fresh blog topper has changed a little. First off, I found an even hipper van complete with galactic scenery to replace the old one. Secondly, the logo is based on the one from Truckin' magazine in the early 80's, in case you wondered (but probably didn't). That font was a pain in the butt to find too, I tell ya!

Where have all the custom vans gone? There seemed to be no shortage in the 70's and 80's....probably gone to scrap heaps, every one. I suppose man hasn't lost his desire to customize, what with the plethora of, dare I say, "pimped out" rides cruising the streets this day and age. But it just isn't the same. Vinyl wraps, LCD screens and LED light just don't hold a candle to porthole windows, deep shag carpet and wood veneer. And who could forget the paint job? Those amazingly airbrushed fantasy scenes of wizards, cosmic beings, other-worldly creatures, space babes, hobbits, barbarians and wide-stretching galaxies. It's a lost art my friends.

This Week In Finds #5

There were three really great estate sales in my town this past weekend and, despite my battles with a mustachioed hipster weeny boy, I managed to score some decent loot!

A couple more Dream Pets for my recent collection. I was pretty thrilled to find the St. Bernard with his cool hat and barrel collar. The other guy is both a Dream pet knock-off and an apparent Snoopy Knock-off. I don't recall Snoopy ever wearing thick-rimmed glasses and a plaid bow....I also need to find him a nose!

I've been wanting to get some more 45 cases lately, but didn't feel like paying $20 (and sometimes more!) for one on Ebay. Luckily I found a couple of great ones for El Cheapo. The jean Platter Pak is my new fave, the other I'll stick on the 'bay and get myself a little piece o' the action!

A couple jugs for my mini-jug/hillbilly collection.

I found oodles of great mags and comics too. There is tons of cool junk hidin' inside these babies, plenty to share here later!!!

A few neato buttons. "Cavalier Power" is a 70's pin from my old high school in Corunna, MI. The "Patriots" pin has moving eyeballs! I'm not sure if "Pepper Power' is referring to Dr. Pepper or not, but just plain peppers are cool too.

A friend of my mom's hooked me up with these happenin' shades!

A devil dragster by Hot Wheels, a Jaguar D-type by Tootsietoy, a Capn' Crunch Whistle and a Mattel major Matt Mason helmet. I snagged three of these helmets, which fetch between $20-30 on Ebay! I guess kids always lost 'em!

The whistle has a pretty funny story: This guy John Draper, a Vietnam Vet, used the whistle to hack phone lines in the early 70's and make free long distance calls! The whistle produces a 2600 hertz tone used by the phone companies in them days to open lines for long distance calls to go through. Draper later developed "blue boxes" which could produce many different tones to fool the phone lines.

Some Andy Capp books. I was surprised to find out that this dude has been around since 1917! Damn, I love them Cheddar Fries too....

This 70's custom van model was my coolest find of the weekend, and at $6, my most expensive. Not bad really, seeings how it's still sealed in plastic. Unfortunately, I have no talent or patience for building models, but it will look cool on a shelf!

Heino LP Covers

Heino is like the German albino Elvis. He sings popular music (Schlager) and traditional Volksmusik with a super-scary deep bass voice. Beside the fact that they look really cool, you'll never see him without his shades either since he has humongous bulging eyeballs! I had originally heard of Heino by way of singer Beck, who borrowed one of Heino's album covers for his own "Steve Threw Up" single in 1994. Years later I spotted one of his LP's at a thrift store, and soon became obsessed with finding more. The music contained within is pretty darn good if you ask me, but Heino's true masterpieces are the jacket covers themselves. How does he maintain that same deadpan glazed face on every cover, especially when he is sitting there with a mess of poodles? It's the work of true genius!

Sooo, here they are now for you to enjoy, marvel at, and possibly have nightmares about.

My first Heino find. While he does have a sweet look going, he hasn't yet mastered his craft...

Here's the cover Beck swiped in '94, and with good reason. It rules.

Again with the brown leather jacket, and poodle dogs descending in shade! Amazing, but the best is yet to come.

This is the man's magnum opus. Brown leather swapped for bad-ass black. The widest lapels and bell bottoms known to man. Cheesy poodles swapped for tear-your-ass-open German Shepard's. And finally, gleaming rays of heavenly light ascending upon the him, as if God was saying "This Heino, is your finest hour." And it is.

I haven't had one of these updates in a while mostly because I really haven't been buying much lately. Now that my tax wealth is spent, I guess i have to be a little more selective, and stay the heck off Ebay! I did pick up some cool stuff at some estate sales recently though. It was the month of Dream Pets!

I don't know what you call these dudes, but they were worth a buck a piece I guess. They did need some HEAVY grooming, hahaha! I need to paint in the eyeballs on the green fella too.

Here are some Holiday friends. I think the Valentines girl might have been holding a big heart or something. I think she looks uncannily like Carol Channing! My mom found the funny lil leprechaun in a pile of junk on St. Patrick's day!

I dug this old phone out of a dumpster, still needs some cleaning up, but it looks cool. I really dig the avocado color.

This pink poodle appears to be a knock-off Dream Pet. She is made of Naugahyde like material, rather than velveteen like the real ones. I also picked up these cool 60's joke books.

This skunk is a genuine Dream Pet. He needed a little TLC, but is lookin' gooood now!

I'm gonna have tons of new junk to display this Christmas, including a new knee-hugger, this Dream Pet reindeer, and these awesome Christmas 45's from the 50's! My, how the Chipmunks have changed...

Wow! Look at that all-star cast! This is a relic from the Christian "End of the world" movie craze of the late 90's. There was a whole slew of these movies, with such A-list actors as Kirk Cameron, Mr. T and Corbin Bernson living in the days of the Antichrist. Busey is surprisingly tame in this flick, with exception of a couple burts of rage. Howie Mandel is a total loon though....and of course, Satan is a dude with a ponytail. Satan is always a dude with a ponytail!

Carrot Top's Junk In the Trunk

I was pretty excited to find this forgotten document of "dork humor" peering at me from the Salvation Army shelves the other day. Like Gallagher before him, Carrot top was a master prop comic. He's also the epitome of over the top pseudo-hippie 90's style. It's a shame that he has transformed into a nightmarish, plastic-surgery-gone-wrong, muscle bound 'roid freak. A damn shame. The book itself is full of zany pics of Carrot Top demonstrating his goofy gadgets, many of which reference insanely outdated pop culture icons. I still can't believe the original cover price on this of $15.00! Sheeesh!

I actually went to high school with these guys in the late 90's, but I won't name names. Somehow the photo wound up in a different town all together too. A glob of muck has shielded the identity of one of the rapists, luckily for him!

I have always been fascinated by these weird "virtual" VHS tapes thet allow you to be transported into another world or even bring things like fish tanks and fireplaces right into your living room through the modern miracle of the VCR. Though they are dreadfully boring to watch (uh I guess maybe they weren't meant to be watched for entertainment, heh), they are a cool concept that didn't really carry over to the DVD age.

Yikes, look how fat those cats are getting sitting there watching TV all day! i saw one of these tapes for dogs once that had footage of food, fire hydrants and mail men. I kick myself for not buying it!

She's thinking "Dammit, I forgot to hit play! Now I gotta get up, walk back over there...."

This pamphlet came in the Video Fireplace box. As if you probably didn't shell out enough bread for this tape, they want you to buy wood scented incense for "added dimension". I do wanna check out the Video Kaleidoscope though!

This Week (and last week) in Finds #3

Most of this weeks purchases were Ebay goodies, I did find a couple cool things at the thrifties and a weird sale that I may share later too.

This nifty hillbilly guy is by Norcrest, but is exactly like a hillbilly made by Kreiss for their "Psycho Ceramics" line. Is it a knockoff or the original? I kinda wanna get a nicer feather for him too, but I guess a mountain man would have a grungy feather, eh?

This lazy bum is a no name "Made in Japan" dealio. I am working on a collection of bums, hobos, winos and tramps too!

This is about 6" tall. It matches my similar "Hang Loose" hand!

Oddly enough, this is the wrong finger!

I had to get this dirty hippie! My great Aunt had the same one when I was a kid. She used to get me down a box of cool 60's toys to play with every Thanksgiving. He also has a parachute, but looks cooler without it on.

This naughty minx is an A.M. radio! Unfortunately it doesn't work, but it was a steal for $13 (I just saw one go for over $100 on Ebay!) She's about a foot tall.

Her "thingies" are the radio knobs!

My folks picked me up this far out fiber optic lamp. It spins around and changes colors! Psycho-delic!

Basically this magazine is just a collection of adult themed jokes and cartoons. There a lot of funny pokes at the hippie culture too. The coolest thing about this issue is the cover, which is printed in psychedelic day-glo ink! Printed in 1969.

I've always been intrigued by these far out covers. The cosmic beings, the beastly creatures, the wondrous titles set in groovy typefaces. I love the whole package! Although I've never really read the books themselves, I might start. If these interest you, you might check out the movie "Gentlemen Broncos" which features a great title sequence made with these wild sci-fi paperbacks!

Lately I've been mostly interested in collecting two things: Hillbilly stuff and Risqué Barware stuff. Most of this weeks purchases fit right into those categories. I don't know why I'm so attracted to these things. I guess it's the low brow sense of humor they are made with and the chinsy craftsmanship above all. This is the kind of stuff I remember my Grandparents having high up on shelves when I was a kid and watching all the grownups get a kick out of 'em. I like to imagine somebody bought this junk at some second rate novelty store as a gag gift for a buddy at work back in the 70's or something...

This ashtray was an Ebay purchase. Her nips are actually sparkly rubies.

I have another cup that's very similar to this one. I've seen lots of variations of these on Ebay and hope to get a couple more soon.

Here are more cups in the same style. These ones are miniature size.

Found this here hillbilly boy at the antique mall on Monday. It was worth the $5 since I've been looking so hard for some of these dudes lately.

The guy in the center is very similar to the other hillbilly, but I think he's missing his hair, beard and hat. i haven't decided if I wanna try to make some up for him or leave him alone since he does look pretty funny without 'em! The little salt and pepper shaker jugs were a present from some pals and are a great addition to my mini jug collection!

I actually have a bunch of this type of stuff that I will share when my collection gets a little more impressive. If anybody out there has any Hillbilly or Nudie items they wanna unload, let me know!

When I was just a wee little tike, my favorite food on earth was Chef Boy-ar-dee Ravioli. Whenever my folks gave me the choice of what I wanted for my birthday dinner, I always chose this stuff (much to their dismay), even into my teen years! Nowadays it pretty much grosses me out though, hahahaaa!

Freak Out, U.S.A

"....This is a Copyrighted term, those of you out there who might be planning to use the word "Freak Out" in conjunction with some business- naughty, naughty. We'll sue you to death. A magazine was about to go onto the market called Freak Out, U.S.A. and they have received a telegram saying 'cease and desist you fools because it will cost you a great quantity of money'..." -Frank Zappa interview, 1967

Frank is referring to the Mothers of Invention's 1966 album titled "Freak Out" and the sudden interest and overuse of the phrase in popular culture. Frank claims to have coined the phrase, which we now use in our everyday vernacular.

So here is Freak Out, U.S.A.- which oddly enough features an interview with Zappa. The publication was very short lived ( I think only two issues), but is a really cool, if cheesy, document of the music scene at the time. I, being a huge Zappa fan (although he can be an a-hole at times) couldn't pass this up.

Like I said, I'm a huge Zappa fan, more specifically the stuff featuring the original Mothers of Invention line-up. They were the freakiest, ugliest, greasiest, weirdest group of the time and that's my bag folks. This collage mimics the style used by Zappa and frequent collaborator Cal Schenkel on the early Mothers LP sleeves.

And the interview itself is quite telling as Zappa explains his anti-drug philosophy and the true meaning of "freaking out"

These are the Fugs who, like the Mothers, were also very greasy, grimy and weird. I love this dude's custom army coat! I'm working on spiffing one up my self...

Valentine's Day Antiquing Fun!

On Valentines Day I took a trip with my pals Andy and CC to a crazy junk store and a nifty antique mall. While the junk store craziness I will save for another day, here are pics of some of the cool stuff I saw at the antique mall in Williamston, MI. This place was chock full of far out stuff with far out prices to match, so it's more like visiting a museum of pop culture history than anything. A boy can dream though!

Spin these glasses around and you can see their tushes (and sometimes more)! Unfortunately these were locked up and strategically placed so I didn't have the pleasure.

I kinda liked these Florida guys. I have a fondness for any kind of vintage souvenirs anyway.

My Grandpa made me a clock exactly like this when I was a little tike. I think it was a kit that you put together yourself. Unfortunately mine broke and I really don't know whatever happened to it. This one brought back good memories.

......And this brought nightmares!

These original 60's psychedelic concert posters had me drooling all over myself. They were only about $1000 dollars each. Think I'll go pick one up when I get my allowance.

Andy and Colleen stopped to pose by the King Kone stand in Perry, MI on the way home. It was just a teeny bit cold out!

I really didn't find much that day, I did nab one little treasure that I'll share at the end of the week, but all in all I had a lotta fun looking for treasures and hanging with my buds on Valentines day!

If you can't already tell, I'm an avid collector of other people's trash. Be it cool old kitschy stuff or literal trash, I love it! I frequent many a thrift store, junk hole, garbage sale, estate sale and dumpster during any given week. Starvation Army, Badwill, Volunqueers of America, you know the places. Soooo, I guess I might keep ya updated on my weekly finds, interesting or otherwise!

I dunno who this dapper dude is, but I like him. I actually had to think about whether he was in fact cool enough to snag or not, but I'm glad I did! He's a bank too.

A Tasco periscope. I can't figure out if this is old or not, I'm getting conflicting facts from Ebay. Anywho, I guess it's pretty cool for 86 cents. This will come in handy in the middle of a snowball battle, peering from behind my snow fortress wall.

This cassette contains Christmas music from the future.

Easyrider's Video Magazine. Video magazines must have been pretty popular in the late 80's-early 90's, as I've seen many of them on various subjects. This was the most entertaining video I've seen in a long time (that is, when the tracking started working!). Ugly biker chicks flashing their saggy boobs, a scary-ass biker comedian, Skanky bar chicks dumping beer all over their bodies, crazy dudes jamming bikes through the mud, tanks and flame-throwing robots....Oh and let's not forget the "Biker Home Videos".

Yes, that's Al from "Home Improvement" and Dave Thomas of "Bob and Doug McKenzie" fame. This is one of those super cheesy Feature Films for Families tapes. I can pretty much guess the plot from the cover art, and I'm pretty sure little else happens. I haven't watched this one yet, not cuz I'm afraid it will suck, but cuz I'm afraid I'll like it.

The following is an excerpt from Spirit World #1 Fall, 1971. Spirit World was the brainchild of the legendary comic artist Jack Kirby and only made it as far as the first issue.

Kirby was a pioneer in more ways than one. Aside from the fact that he was one of the greatest comic illustrators of all time, he also incorporated far out collages into his work on occasion. This is my favorite shot from the spread and it showcases a little bit of Jack's great collage work. It really blows my mind!

RAMBO COLORING BOOK (1985)

This is one of those cheapo drug store coloring books I had so many of growing up as a kid. Somehow this one survived without being colored in, scribbled in or torn to bits. 99 cents seems a little steep to me for 1985, though. Sheesh!

Estate Sale Finds Jan 28

Thursday I went to a very cool estate sale with my folks and found a couple nice items but not much. I guess I feel kind of overwhelmed at these sales sometimes and miss out on great stuff that requires a little more searchin' and diggin'. So, I almost always go back later when the crowds have died down and I have a clearer focus....and for the most part, I usually find the best things on my return visit. Here is some of what I found:

A bunch of 60's-70's Down Beat Magazines. These cover Jazz, Blues and even Rock music. They are a very cool read and have great pictures and ads for vintage music gear. I will be sharing more from these later on.

A big leather wallet. I mean REALLY big at almost 6" long! I have been needing a better wallet anyways and I like these big "pass case" styled ones.

A Hot Wheels Trantula Dragster from the 60's. It's a shame that its busted up and missing some parts, but I couldn't pass it up for next to nothin'.

A couple vintage Gillette razors. The one in back is adjustable. Not sure if these are for sellin' or keepin' yet.

The elusive two-headed Troll doll. Most likely from the 60's or 70's. I've seen a lot of Trolls but never a two-header. Weird! Buried at the bottom of a box of clothes in the attic, I rescued this dude so he could tell his story.

A very psychedelic piece of Beatles sheet music. Oddly enough "And I Love Her" is a very un-psychedelic song from the groups earlier days.

I found a pile of these business cards for the Billy Lewis Quartet. The deceased (Floyd Mooreland of Flint MI) was a sax player (and one hell of a player at that) and played with many groups. I heard that he even played with some of the greats when they rolled through town. I really don't know if the sax player in the pic is him or not though. That leads me to the best of my finds...

A box of 1/4 inch Reel to Reel tapes containing one of a kind live recordings of a group called the Four Gents recorded in 1970 and 1976. These are really great sounding (most likely soundboard) recordings of the group playing jazz, soul, r&b and more. Really an enjoyable listen and hours of it too. One of the best performances I listened to so far was a really smooth jazz interpretation of the Beatles' Eleanor Rigby. There were also literally hundreds of cassettes of live recordings too from later years. I hope that they will get into the right hands and not be lost forever. I'm so glad I went back to the sale!

Apparently in the days of yore, record album sleeves were a great place to stash stuff. On many occasions I have found things like documents, photos, letters, and even a Mary Wanna roach nestled in the gatefold of Led Zeppelin II. I do suppose that they are a perfect place to keep documents safe and flat, as long as you remember just what album you placed that all so important Dear John letter into.

Here we have what appears to be a photo of a man rifling through a trash barrel dated March of 1977 and a Court summons for intoxication dated July of '77. Are these events related in some way? Why did this person feel it necessary to preserve these for future generations inside an Elvis album sleeve? The world may never know (or care).

"Superstar Recording Studios" are these booths at amusement parks like Six Flags and Cedar Point where you can sing along to your favorite songs karaoke style and get a souvenir cassette to take home. I don't know If they still have these or not.

Andy found this tape at a thrift store for me. Recorded at Cedar Point in Sanduky Ohio, this is Michele and Tina's version of the Beastie Boys' "Fight For Your Right", dating this to probably mid to late 80's. A really great and funny find! I love the banter going on at the end of the song.

For a couple years now, I've been collecting what are called "found" items. Things like photos, notes, grocery lists etc. that are found on the street, at thrift stores, in the trash and other places normal people avoid. I'm gonna start sharing these beauties here for you all to enjoy!

Here's my most recent find, a photo I call "Computer Fun". Judging by the boxiness of the computer, the floppy disks on the desk and the clothes on these kids this is most likely late 80's to early 90's. I wonder what they're playing? Mom wonders too. "My turn! My turn!"
